From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. Folk art encompasses art produced from an indigenous culture or by peasants or other laboring tradespeople. In contrast to fine art, folk art is primarily utilitarian and decorative rather than purely aesthetic. As a phenomenon that can chronicle a move towards civilization yet rapidly diminish with modernity, industrialization, or outside influence, the nature of folk art is specific to its particular culture. The varied geographical and temporal prevalence and diversity of folk art make it difficult to describe as a whole, though some patterns have been demonstrated. Antique Folk ArtLogo of the Folk Art Museum Lok Virsa in Islamabad, Pakistan.Antique folk art is distinguished from traditional art in that while it is collected today based mostly on its artistic merit; it was never intended as a category to be art for art’s sake. Examples include: weathervanes, old store signs and carved figures, itinerant portraits, carousel horses, fire buckets, painted game boards, cast iron doorstops and many other similar lines of highly collectible "whimsical" antiques. Answered by Lori M - Sat Jun 28 03:40:51 2008 traditional art pass down to children? Q. Do you think it's important for people who know traditional art forms to pass their knowledge down to their children? Is this still happening? Asked by Feng L - Sat Dec 22 08:44:44 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. I believe some people try. Native Americans made a valliant effort in the 1970s to revive their culture's heritage. With the rise of globalization, it may be difficult to engage children in what they come to view as obsolete cultural forms. But, just as knitting became a fad in the early 21st century, interest in some cultural forms may experience a revival. Ironically, the internet maybe the best way to reach those interested in their roots.
