From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. Printmaking is the process of making artworks by printing, normally on paper. Printmaking normally covers only the process of creating prints with an element of originality, rather than just being a photographic reproduction of a painting. Except in the case of monotyping, the process is capable of producing multiples of the same piece, which is called a 'print'. Each piece produced is not a copy but considered an original since it is not a reproduction of another work of art and is technically (more correctly) known as an 'impression'. Printmaking (other than monotyping) is not chosen only for its ability to produce multiple copies, but rather for the unique qualities that each of the printmaking processes lends itself to. Prints are created from a single original surface, known technically as a matrix. Common types of matrices include: plates of metal, usually copper or zinc for engraving or etching; stone, used for lithography; blocks of wood for woodcuts, linoleum for linocuts and fabric plates for screen-printing. But there are many other kinds of matrix substrates and related processes discussed below. Works printed from a single plate create an edition, in modern times usually each signed and numbered to form a limited edition. Prints may also be published in book form, as artist's books. A single print could be the product of one or multiple techniques. TechniquesFrom Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License any suggestions for respirators for printmaking? Q. does anyone know of any specific respirators to use for printmaking...for protection against acid fumes, asphaltum and aquatint stuff. I am looking for exact brands to use so that I am sure I am using the right thing. I've looked online and I'm a little confused by the variety in mask types. Asked by Pajama Wars - Sat Nov 18 02:15:50 2006 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. You can contact the 3M company for advice as to what type of respirator that you would need to use. Another thing you must be aware of, just because you buy a certain type of respirator, they come in many different sizes and you need to be fit tested before donning one of these. 3M is an excellent choice because they will go in great detail with you about the proper respirators as well as tell you where you might be able to go to be properly fit tested. Just type 3M company into your search engine and it should give you the home website. Good luck. What is the difference between the relief and intaglio printmaking process.? Asked by Olivia - Fri Jun 30 18:18:36 2006 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. In relief printmaking, the matrix is a block of wood or linoleum. Using knives and gouges, the artist cuts away lines and areas. When the artist rolls or dabs ink onto the block, the ink adheres only to the surface, skipping over the cut-away areas. Intaglio (from the Italian world to carve) might be considered the reverse of relief printing. The matrix in intaglio is a thin plate of metal (usually zinc or copper), plexiglass, or any other surface in which a line can be engraved. Each intaglio process uses a different method of creating permanent marks on the plate. Answered by unaamor100 - Fri Jun 30 18:51:22 2006 Printmaking question?
Q. I am taking a printmaking class this summer, and I was a bit confused about some of the art supplies I was requested to get. The first question I have is about soft and still brushes. What is the difference between them, and are they unique to printmaking? Also, what is a twisted etching needle used for? Any information is greatly appreciated! Thanks! =) Asked by Sammy - Mon Jun 30 14:24:51 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. Hi, The twisted etching needle is used to inscribe lines onto a metal plate, usually copper or zinc. You can scratch directly onto a plate which when inked and printed would create a drypoint intaglio print, or you can paint a resist onto the metal plate which you can inscribe lines into and then immerse into an acid bath. The acid etches the inscibed lines deeper into the plate. When inked and printed this creates an intaglio etching print. I have not used the brushes for printing the Moku Hanga Japanese techinique of woodblock printmaking. Here is a website though, McClains, which has a lot of the supplies for a variety of printmaking techniqes including Moku Hanga, also books and they have a website gallery displaying a variety of… [cont.] Answered by Andrea E - Fri Jul 4 18:04:18 2008 From Yahoo Answer Search: "printmaking" Get Your Printmaking On - NBC Bay Area
