Pakistan (Urdu: پاکِستان) (Urdu pronunciation: [paːkɪsˈtaːn] ( listen)), officially the Islamic Republic of Pakistan (Urdu: اسلامی جمہوریہ پاکِستان) (also the Federation of Pakistan), is a country in South Asia. It has a 1,046-kilometre (650 mi) coastline along the Arabian Sea and Gulf of Oman in the south, is bordered by Afghanistan and Iran in the west, and India in the east and China in the far northeast. Tajikistan also lies very close to Pakistan but is separated by the narrow Wakhan Corridor. Thus, it occupies a crossroads position between South Asia, Central Asia and the Middle East. The region forming modern Pakistan was at the heart of the ancient Indus Valley Civilisation and then later was the recipient of Vedic, Persian, Indo-Greek, Islamic, Turco-Mongol, and Sikh cultures. The area has witnessed invasions and/or settlements by the Indo-Aryans, Persians, Greeks, Arabs, Turks, Afghans, Mongols and the British. While the Indian independence movement demanded an independent India, the Pakistan Movement (led by Quaid e Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah of the All-India Muslim League) sought independent states for the majority Muslim populations of the eastern and western regions of British India as well. The British granted independence and also the creation of one Muslim majority state of Pakistan that comprised the provinces of Sindh, North-West Frontier Province, West Punjab, Balochistan and East Bengal. With the adoption of its constitution in 1956, Pakistan became an Islamic republic. In 1971, a civil war in East Pakistan resulted in the creation of Bangladesh. Pakistan is a federal parliamentary republic consisting of four provinces and four federal territories including a federal capital territory. Its history has been characterized by periods of military rule, political instability and conflicts with neighboring India. It is the sixth most populous country in the world and has the second largest Muslim population after Indonesia. Pakistan also has the second largest Shia Muslim population. It is the only Muslim-majority state that possesses nuclear weapons and is designated as a major non-NATO ally of the United States. Pakistan is a founding member of the Organization of the Islamic Conference and a member of the United Nations, Commonwealth of Nations, Next Eleven economies and the G20 developing nations. GNU Free Documentation License How the tragic and violent events in Pakistan are going to affect India? Q. However, opposed both India and Pakistan are towards each other, they share a common destiny. One cannot remain impervious to the happenings across the borders in the other country. Benazir's assassination has shocked the Indians as much as the assassination of Indira Gandhi did. It has caused the ripples even in the West and in all liberal democracies. For such is the brutality of the event. What are the lessons that the Indian need to learn from these incidents in Pakistan? Asked by ulagam - Mon Dec 31 11:39:13 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. I am from Pakistan. It was in-fact a disaster. Now the situation is going to be normalised. In-fact there was a heavy property loss. As compare to property loss life loss was is very low. Affected political leadership has played very vital role to normalise the situation. We may not call it riot. I don't think India has to worry about its security threats due to this disaster. The only threat to India is the mutual trade problems as Pakistan has suffered a lot in its communication network e.g. Railway, Trailers, Tankers and Trucks destroyed high number in quantity. Every Pakistani is condemning the violent situation. Who did it? Its big question. In my personal opinion it was the result of global proxy war which is being fought in… [cont.] Answered by Nick 1 - Tue Jan 1 06:44:49 2008 Why is Pakistan and Israel so much important to USA out of 200 nations out there? Q. Pakistan is the eye of the storm for USA. And the only foreign nation that is true friend is Israel despite its hatred by the whole world. And the rest 200 nations of the world are, well, just "nations" for USA, not much important except guarding the Kings and Dictators of third world (including Arab nations). Do you agree with this sort of foreign policy of USA? Asked by Amir - Thu Nov 6 06:11:24 2008 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments A.
