The Netherlands (pronounced /ˈnɛðɚləndz/ ( listen); Dutch: Nederland, pronounced [ˈneːdərlɑnt] ( listen)) is a constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, located in North-West Europe. It is a parliamentary democratic constitutional monarchy. The Netherlands borders the North Sea to the north and west, Belgium to the south, and Germany to the east, and water borders with Denmark, Norway and United Kingdom. The capital is Amsterdam and the seat of government is The Hague. The Netherlands in its entirety is often referred to as Holland, although North and South Holland are actually only two of its twelve provinces (see terminology of "the Netherlands"). The word Dutch is used to refer to the people, the language, and anything pertaining to the Netherlands. This lexical difference between the noun and the adjective is an attribute of the English language that does not exist in the Dutch language. The adjective 'Dutch' is derived from the language that was spoken in the area, called 'Diets', which equals Middle Dutch. The Netherlands was one of the first parliamentary democracies. Among other affiliations the country is a founding member of the European Union (EU), NATO, OECD and WTO. With Belgium and Luxembourg it forms the Benelux economic union. The country is host to five international courts: the Permanent Court of Arbitration, the International Court of Justice, the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia, the International Criminal Court and the Special Tribunal for Lebanon. The first four are situated in The Hague as is the EU's criminal intelligence agency Europol and judicial co-operation agency Eurojust. This has led to the city being dubbed "the world's legal capital". The Netherlands has a capitalist market-based economy, ranking 15th of 157 countries according to the Index of Economic Freedom. The Netherlands is a geographically low-lying country, with about 20% of its area and 21% of its population located below sea level, with 50% of its land lying less than one metre above sea level. Significant land area has been gained through land reclamation and preserved through an elaborate system of polders and dikes. Much of the Netherlands is formed by the estuary of three important European rivers, which together with their distributaries form the Rhine-Meuse-Scheldt delta. Most of the country is very flat, with the exception of foothills in the far southeast and several low-hill ranges in the central parts. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License What is the history of the Netherlands and their current position on lowering food prices? Q. Please don't think this is for homework, because it isn't. I'm currently doing extracurricular research on this, and it's very hard to find concrete accomplishments and policy positions regarding food prices that the Netherlands has or has had in the past. Any help would be appreciated. Asked by Akshat S - Thu Jan 8 17:55:31 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. Dutch policies on the international front are limited to emergency aid and assistance for small farmers in countries that are affected. The Dutch government seeks a European approach on food prices, but is not prepared to subsidize this from the money the EU needs to subsidize its own farmers. The Netherlands has in July put forward an alternative proposal with the same objective, but that respects previous agreements concerning the EU budget. The core of this is: (1) unused budget resources return to the Member States, as agreed; (2) the Council calls on the Member States to put these resources (and possibly others) to use in suppression of the impact of the high food prices; (3) the Commission opens an account where Member States can… [cont.] Answered by Enduringwisdom - Mon Jan 12 13:21:24 2009 How can i recieve transfer of money from America to the Netherlands? Q. i am living in the netherlands, have a dutch Rabobank account but what does she need to send money from her american credit union account so that it can transfer properly? Please help!! fast!! :) Asked by kara b - Thu Nov 20 05:36:49 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. I don't have Rabobank but do have ABN Amro and we send money abroad to my husband's family (we have been building a house there). Paypal is an option but it is slow Western Union is actually more expensive than a bank-to-bank transfer (at least for the values that we were sending anyway). So we sent it via internet banking - bank to bank. Get her to check with her bank what details they need - likely she will need your account number, location, holder's name, IBAN and BIC codes (usually on your statements) You can read more in English on the ABN Amro pages here Answered by bl bl - Thu Nov 20 09:56:44 2008 How to open an account in Netherlands without Sofi number?
Q. I dont have a Dutch residence but I want to open an account in Netherlands. I am a residence of Iceland now. I know that some Dutch banks only open account for people with a Dutch ssn. I've heard that ABN-AMRO may open an account for me. Does it? Is it a reliable bank? Any other useful data? Asked by marja - Sat Nov 29 18:58:10 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. ABN Amro is indeed a good bank (I am an account holder so can vouch for this fact!). Answering a question a while ago for someone else, I checked their site and it seems that they will open an account for expats coming to live in the Netherlands from abroad, but it is best for you to contact them directly to make sure Regarding the Sofi number - actually now it is called a Burger Service number (BSN) and to obtain this, you have to be resident in the Netherlands and registered at the local town hall to where you live. I used to live in Amstelveen until recently so am aware that some of the town hall pages are in English, so you can read more about it here Answered by bl bl - Mon Dec 1 02:33:58 2008 From Yahoo Answer Search: "netherlands" Mangongo eyes Intercontinental Cup success - The Zimbabwean
