From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. Seamanship is the art of operating a ship or boat. It involves a knowledge of a variety of topics and development of specialised skills including: navigation and international maritime law; weather, meteorology and forecasting; watchstanding; ship-handling and small boat handling; operation of deck equipment, anchors and cables; ropework and line handling; communications; sailing; engines; execution of evolutions such as towing; cargo handling equipment, dangerous cargoes and cargo storage; dealing with emergencies; survival at sea and search and rescue; fire fighting. The degree of knowledge needed within these areas is dependent upon the nature of the work and the type of vessel employed by a mariner. However, the practice of good seamanship should be the goal of all. NavigationMore than just finding a vessel's present location, safe navigation includes predicting future location, route planning and collision avoidance. Asked by Stephanie - Mon Feb 5 23:52:26 2007 - - 4 Answers - 2 Comments A. "The nautical star is a very old modern tattoo, going back at least a century or more. Back in the days of yore, before modern navigation, sailors would navigate in part by the stars in the night skies, in particular the North Star in the Northern Hemisphere, and various other constellations of stars in the night sky. In the Southern Hemisphere, sailors had to use different stars and the Southern Cross became quite well-known. Sailors would then tattoo nautical stars on them because they relied on the stars to take them home, and being superstitious, they hoped their star tattoos would get them home safely as well. Compass stars are also popular for this reason. The nautical stars were originally used by sailors to help guide their way as… [cont.] Answered by Albertan - Tue Feb 6 00:00:53 2007 How far are the two ships separating when the second ship has traveled 90 nautical miles? Q. A ship leaves a port at noon and travels due west at 20 knots. At 6 pm a second ship leaves the same port and travels northwest at 15 knots. How far are the two ships separating when the second ship has traveled 90 nautical miles? and i dont know a thing about solving calculus problems. lol Asked by butidigress - Mon Oct 1 06:34:32 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. This is not a calculus problem, it's a trigo problem. *knots = nautical mile per hour* Since the speed of ship #2 is 15 knots, then the time it took to travel 90 n.m. is time = distance / rate time = 90 / 15 time = 6 hours Since the first ship traveled at 12, then it has traveled 6 hours more than the second ship. So when the 2nd ship has traveled 6 hours, the first ship has traveled for 12 hours. The distance that it has covered during this time is: distance = rate*time distance = 20*12 distance = 240 n.m. You now have an oblique triangle: one side is 90 n.m. and the other is 240 n.m. The angle between these two sides is 45 degrees. The distance between the two ships is determined by the third side, which is also the side opposite… [cont.] Answered by tangy - Mon Oct 1 08:46:17 2007 How many degrees of latitude is one nautical mile?
