A museum is a building or institution that houses and cares for a collection of artifacts and other objects of scientific, artistic, or historical importance and makes them available for public viewing through exhibits that may be permanent or temporary. Most large museums are located in major cities throughout the world and more local ones exist in smaller cities, towns and even the countryside.

Early museums began as the private collections of wealthy individuals, families or institutions of art and rare or curious natural objects and artifacts.

The museums of ancient times, such as the Musaeum of Alexandria, would be equivalent to a modern graduate institute.

Is there anything interesting to visit on a rainy day in Ottawa beside museums?
Q. I'm visiting Ottawa next week for the beginning of tulips festival. They are a lot of museums that I'm planning to visit but I would like other suggestions for a rainy day, We don't mind getting a little out of the cities (30 min. radius). Thank you.

A. There is the Rideau Centre Shopping Centre with a wide variety of stores to look at, a food court and a movie theatre. This is located right downtown. Access either from Rideau Street, Nicholas Street (parking available at that entrance) or McKenzie King Bridge. An excursion to the "Diefenbunker" west of Ottawa in Carp Ontario. It is an old fall-out shelter that used to be ready for the important government personnel in the event of an atomic bomb. Really interesting - also to get to see the "older" style of computers they were using at that time also. The place is HUGE! A lot of walking and many stairs to get to the various levels, but well worth the trip out there! Check out the site below. Also, check out the Museum of… [cont.]

A. Blue Sky is not a museum, it's an animation studio. Try: Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art - MOCCA. 594 Broadway New York, NY 10012-3234 (212) 254-3511 www.moccany.org

Can anyone explain to me how camera flashes damage art, such as old paintings in museums?
Q. Can anyone explain to me how camera flashes damage art in museums? What happens when an old painting is photographed with a flash? I'ts some kind of reaction?

A. The camera steals the soul of the painting... Sorry, that doesn't help. I've mostly assumed you're requested not to use flash photography in such places so as to not disturb the other patrons.
