Much more naturalism, realism, and a huge amount of patronage and commissioning. Furthermore, the Renaissance produced Raphael, Leonardo, Michelangelo, and so on - acknowledged, some in their day, as being the best at their crafts/s. Having said that, the Renaissance could not have happened had it not been for the Medieval period, so it's hard to objectively say one or the other.
