Is a irish republic terrorist in the same category as a islamic terrorist?
Q. Fighting for freedom or fighting to harm. What are the irish doing to stop terrorism or are the irish causing the panic in the streets of England with terrorism. Are terrorists all the same or do they have different thought on why they are fighting.

A. You are several years to late with this! Irish terrorism has abated! There is no panic in the streets of England due to Irish terrorism anymore & hopefully it will stay that way! Diffference between the two anyway--both evil, but at least the Irish terrorists often gave a warning prior to a bomb blast and often targeted military areas, whereas the Islamics don't warn and go for mass civilian casualties on trains, planes,or in holiday/hotel areas.

Irish Music- How do you tell the difference between a reel, slip jig, light jig, etc?
Q. I am taking irish dance lessons, and I cannot identifiy what type of music I own. How do you tell the difference? I have a basic working knowledge of reading and counting music.

A. Confusing, isn't it? I like to buy my practice music that tells me the speed and the type, i.e. reel 143, etc. I believe slip jigs are in 5/8 time, treble jigs are 3/3, reels are 4/4 and I think hornpipes are 2/4 (not sure.) Once you get your steps down, you will be able to hear the steps in the music. My daughter is able to discern steps that are compatible with reels and hornpipes in modern music. Give it some time and you will too, I bet. If you would like to meet a bunch of dancers and musicians that are into Irish Dance, check out

is the fingering for an 8 key irish flute the same as a standard flute?
Q. I play a standard professional flute and I've been thinking of getting an Irish flute but I want it the fingering to be close to a standard flute. The only type that looks close to a standard flute is an eight keyed irish flute. But is the fingering the same? And though it looks like a standard flute, should I bother getting an 8 keyed irish flute, does it matter what kind I get? what key is usually used? I've seen a lot of D and C.
Asked by Spirit - Sun Jan 13 09:23:49 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Yes, the fingering is essentially the same. Tho' you'll have to use cross-fingerings more often, since there's only one way to play each note (for example, Bb is always going to be the first two holes and the Bb key--you can't play it by holding down 1 and 4 or by using the thumb-plate.). Now, if you are after that wood tone and you don't care about key systems specifically, know that you can find good old wooden concert flutes with various key systems that are more advanced--even some in the Boehm system that we all know and love. Look on ebay (and check both the "antiques" and the "musical instruments" categories). Or shop one of the retailers like Lark in the Morning.
