Impressionism was a 19th-century art movement that began as a loose association of Paris-based artists whose independent exhibitions brought them to prominence in the 1870s and 1880s. The name of the movement is derived from the title of a Claude Monet work, Impression, Sunrise (Impression, soleil levant), which provoked the critic Louis Leroy to coin the term in a satiric review published in Le Charivari.

Characteristics of Impressionist paintings include relatively small, thin, yet visible brush strokes, open composition, emphasis on the accurate depiction of light in its changing qualities (often accentuating the effects of the passage of time), ordinary subject matter, the inclusion of movement as a crucial element of human perception and experience, and unusual visual angles. The emergence of Impressionism in the visual arts was soon followed by analogous movements in other media which became known as Impressionist music and Impressionist literature.

Impressionism also describes art created in this style, but outside of the late 19th century time period.

A. Realism was the movement which directly preceded Impressionism. It began in the 1860s in France, arguably with Gustave Courbet, who tried to reveal the harsh reality of "un-bourguois" culture by painting seemingly mundane everyday rural scenes on an epic scale similar to that of history painting. But Realism overlapped with Impressionism, and continued until the late 19th century. Here's a link:

A. Well, Impressionism is an art period, you're wanting to make an Impressionistic painting. To achieve that you must use the technique they used which was Broken Color and they did paint En Plein Air (outside) to capture the lights and shadows that played on the colors. The broken color technique is the placing of short brush strokes down on the canvas side by side and when you step back will visually create the color you are wanting to achieve. Some colors will have to be pre-mixed before laying them down - in tints, tones and shades of what is on the color wheel. I would check out the book Acrylic Workshop or Acrylic School. They both have great visuals for this technique to make an Impressionistic painting.
