Germany (pronounced /ˈdʒɜrməni/ ( listen)), officially the Federal Republic of Germany (German: Bundesrepublik Deutschland, pronounced [ˈbʊndəsʁepuˌbliːk ˈdɔʏtʃlant] ( listen)), is a country in Central Europe. It is bordered to the north by the North Sea, Denmark, and the Baltic Sea; to the east by Poland and the Czech Republic; to the south by Austria and Switzerland; and to the west by France, Luxembourg, Belgium, and the Netherlands. The territory of Germany covers 357,021 square kilometers (137,847 sq mi) and is influenced by a temperate seasonal climate. With 82 million inhabitants, it accounts for the largest population among the member states of the European Union and is home to the third-largest number of international migrants worldwide.

A region named Germania inhabited by several Germanic peoples has been known and documented before AD 100. Beginning in the 10th century, German territories formed a central part of the Holy Roman Empire that lasted until 1806. During the 16th century, northern Germany became the centre of the Protestant Reformation. As a modern nation-state, the country was first unified amidst the Franco-Prussian War in 1871. In 1949, after World War II, Germany was divided into two separate states—East Germany and West Germany—along the lines of Allied occupation. The two states were unified in 1990. West Germany was a founding member of the European Community (EC) in 1957, which became the European Union in 1993. It is part of the Schengen zone and adopted the European currency, the euro, in 1999.

Germany is a federal parliamentary republic of sixteen states (Länder). The capital and largest city is Berlin. Germany is a member of the United Nations, NATO, G8 and the OECD. It is a major economic power with the world's fourth largest economy by nominal GDP and the fifth largest in purchasing power parity. It is the largest exporter and second largest importer of goods. In absolute terms, Germany allocates the second biggest annual budget of development aid in the world, while its military expenditure ranked sixth. The country has developed a high standard of living and established a comprehensive system of social security. It holds a key position in European affairs and maintains a multitude of close partnerships on a global level. Germany is recognised as a scientific and technological leader in several fields.

What is the chance of Germany rising up and starting another world war?
Q. WW2 was the biggest war in history. Germany could have won the war just as easily as anyone else. They were a powerful nation with many allies that only lost because they had a really insane leader. Do you think it's possible for the German nazi's to assemble and come back more powerful and more strong than ever?

A. There is no way in hell that Germany is going to "rise up" and start another global conflict. The Germans are nothing like they are negatively depicted. As a whole, they are very open-minded and non-confrontational. There are some idiots, most who live in the former East Germany, who want to live the "glory days" of the Third Reich, but they are less than 1% of the population. Most are the complete opposite of what the Nazis were. Middle-aged Germans remember growing up in a devastated country and had to rebuild the nation literally brick-by-brick. They learned their lesson and want to have a peaceful and prosperous coexistence with the rest of Europe and the world.

Where can i find cheap flights to germany?
Q. I want to travel to germany for the summer of 2010. I would most likely fly out of san francisco and would preferably love to land in frankfurt. I am also planning ahead so i can save some money. Anything will help.

A. Currently, Travelocity quotes US$ 1154 for non stop flights San francisco - Frankfurt on June 2, 2010, Return June 16, 2010 with United or Lufthansa. Getting prices for July or August 2010 is too early. Travelocity is the booking site that usually offers the best deals in the USA. Be aware that prices change with time. So book your flight as soon as you got funds because prices may go up later on. Finding online the cheapest flight for you is the job of Travelocity and similar flights brokers/ booking sites. The best ones are listed here: No hidden fees. Use flexible dates in your query .

How often do my cats need to be vaccinated in Germany?
Q. I live in Germany with my 2 cats. I know in the States you only have to give them a rabies shot every 3 years, does anyone know the rule in Germany?

A. Normal vaccinations should be done annually. As for rabies, I'm not too sure. Call up your local vet or animal hospital for advice on vaccinations, and request for a brochure on vaccinations from them at the same time. Good luck.
