How can I make the Mexican folk art skeleton figures?
Q. I absolutely love Mexican folk art and I really want to know how to make the skeleton figures that have wire in them so they are bendable. Are they made with clay? If so, what kind, and where could I find that kind of clay? Thanks!

Can someone who is an art dealer tell me about my piece of folk art on ebay-a 5" wood carving of a woman?
Q. If you go on ebay, it's in Antiques, then "folk art', then'sculpted or carved', then between '1900-1949'. It is an old woman wearing a dress and an apron, with her hair in a bun, that was hand carved. I thought it might be Elijah Pierce's work, but after looking at his work it appears he did mostly 2D pieces. So really I have no clue. That's all I'm looking for - is some direction. Any help would be appreciated.

how do i use folk art textile medium?
Q. I just bought a 2oz bottle of Folk Art Textile Medium 2232. The instructions tell me to "Mix 2 parts Medium to 1 part FolkArt Acrylic Paint." Does this mean for ever bottle of paint I use, i have to add 2 bottles of this textile medium? The ratio doesn't make sense. I wanted to ask around before actually attempting, this.
Asked by Ms.Manly - Sat Aug 15 18:04:13 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Yes, if the paint is in 2oz bottles, or you can mix one bottle of medium to 1/2 oz. of paint, or 1/2 oz of medium to 1/4 oz. paint and so on. It's the suggested mix for screen printing i'm thinking but your can mix how ever you like based on your project.

What is a folk or art song?
Q. My University requires auditions for musical ensembles and this is what they say for vocalists: vocalists should try to bring a prepared folk or art song if possible. I've been in multiple choruses all my life but I am not exactly sure if I have been singing what would be called folk or art songs... Can anybody tell me what kind of songs fit these categories or give me any insight on the type of music they are looking for?
Asked by rachel_ohanlon - Mon May 26 19:42:13 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Folk can either mean old traditional songs like "John Henry" or when "Johnny Comes Marching Home," or more modern songs by singer-songwriters, often with traditional instruments like acoustic guitars or banjoes. See artists like Sufjan Stevens, Iron and Wine, Joanna Newsom, or Cat Power for modern folk.

A. Hi, here are the best websites (with pics) for Bangladesh folk arts. There is an Arts and Crafts museum in Dacca, but their site has no visuals, just a summary of the museum. here is a good site about the best book about Bangladesh contemporary art (it has some visuals) Perhaps, the best known and most documented folk art of Bangladesh is the "ricksha" art. Ricksha owners paint their vehicles in very individual ways and with rich imagery. There are books and sites on the subject, but this is my favorite because it has the best on-line gallery: Finally here is one museum site with an interesting dicussion of craft revival: Remember Bangladesh was part of the Indian state of Bengal until 1947, so you can find discussions of… [cont.]

A. They alter for social, cultural and religious reasons as symbols (in art) are interpreted in a slightly different way because of the above differences. for example: in new zealand maori art is different to aborigine art because of the simple fact that different pigments (natural dyes) are used in the painting process. (it was difficult to obtain a dye that you couldnt grow naturally) You could argue therefore that differences are also demographic as well as social simply because the land in which people live is both changeable (due to the climate) and used for different reasons. For example the aborigines were nomads (wandering people) and the maori's settlers, consequently their music and folk lore represents this. Hope this helps. If you… [cont.]

A. You should be careful when using websites as there is a lot of rubbish about that particular subject nowadays. You would be better to look at journals which specialise in art, folklore and related issues. Journals are much more likely to get you correct reliable information written by respectable people, and not just the nut job down the road who wants a bit of money! Good Luck!

Q. when i paint folk art do i paint light to dark or dark to light? can someone help please!!! i am painting a key holder for my mum and it isnt just art but im using wood and acrylic and i bought some expensive brushes to use and they work great i only painted the under coat today in a light beige
Asked by lizzle sizzle - Mon Jan 29 01:38:49 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. It depends. If you are painting in water based paints, you would go light to dark. (water colors, fabric paint etc.) If you are using acrylic, oils or house paint, you will want to go dark to light. It is also going to depend on your surface. Painting on paper, tissue and fabrics it is better to go light to dark. (You don't want your surface to crumple on you.) On canvas, wood, tin and other hard surfaces you will probably go dark to light. The truth of the matter is... it depends on you. Go with the flow. Don't stress how other people are doing it... do what works best for you. Each artist has their own finger print, their own style. You have to figure out which way is going to be yours. Hey, It is only Art... have some Fun… [cont.]
