How can I make the Mexican folk art skeleton figures?
Q. I absolutely love Mexican folk art and I really want to know how to make the skeleton figures that have wire in them so they are bendable. Are they made with clay? If so, what kind, and where could I find that kind of clay? Thanks!

A. You will love this website, it is a great site for Day of the Dead ideas. The figures are made of papier mache which is very easy to work with, you just wrap it around the wires. Can someone who is an art dealer tell me about my piece of folk art on ebay-a 5" wood carving of a woman?
Q. If you go on ebay, it's in Antiques, then "folk art', then'sculpted or carved', then between '1900-1949'. It is an old woman wearing a dress and an apron, with her hair in a bun, that was hand carved. I thought it might be Elijah Pierce's work, but after looking at his work it appears he did mostly 2D pieces. So really I have no clue. That's all I'm looking for - is some direction. Any help would be appreciated.

how do i use folk art textile medium?
Q. I just bought a 2oz bottle of Folk Art Textile Medium 2232. The instructions tell me to "Mix 2 parts Medium to 1 part FolkArt Acrylic Paint." Does this mean for ever bottle of paint I use, i have to add 2 bottles of this textile medium? The ratio doesn't make sense. I wanted to ask around before actually attempting, this.
Asked by Ms.Manly - Sat Aug 15 18:04:13 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Yes, if the paint is in 2oz bottles, or you can mix one bottle of medium to 1/2 oz. of paint, or 1/2 oz of medium to 1/4 oz. paint and so on. It's the suggested mix for screen printing i'm thinking but your can mix how ever you like based on your project.

A. I LOVE the color and the honesty of the subject matter.I am also intrigued by the particular mix that says "Spanish Inquisition/Aztec death cult. Don't get me wrong I am not into the macabre as a general rule. It just really interests me the way the natives incorporated the Catholicism of Spain into their traditional visual art. All of those Day of the Dead figures and the figures of the saints with their broken bodies and streaming tears. Even "insider art" like that of Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo is just an educated, classically influenced morph of the same thing. Mexican folk art has a delightful vulgarity to it, the stylized shapes and symbols, the bright colors, the exuberance, the absolute honesty that is like Mexican food -… [cont.]

How would one get a government grant to promote the art of Folk dancing?
Q. It seems many of our folk dancing groups are dying off due to lack of funds to promote. It would be a shame to see these art forms disappear
Asked by Ibredd - Mon Oct 6 20:17:45 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. We havent seen many grants over the last 5 years. But there are "bond money" issues that are voted on by cities and states. They agree to provide financing for the "arts". You apply and they give you money. You would be expected to pay this back either by making money from the dancing or by performing at city and state ceremonies as a featured entertainer..

A. A common misconception in the United States is that Cinco de Mayo is Mexico's Independence Day; Mexico's Independence Day is September 16 (dieciseis de septiembre in Spanish). About skeletons in Mexican folk art: It represents the dead. The Spanish in Mexico incorporated parts of the indigenous belief system into Dia de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead). This is celebrated every year on All Hallow's Eve (Halloween), and All Soul's Eve; October 31st and November 1st, respectivly. More than 500 years ago, when the Spanish Conquistadors landed in what is now Mexico, they encountered natives practicing a ritual that seemed to mock death. It was a ritual the indigenous people had been practicing at least 3,000 years. A ritual the Spaniards… [cont.]

There are 3 artists named James Cole. How do I find out which artist did my painting? I have asked art folk.
Q. My painting is of a young mother holding an infant in the doorway of her home. A small dog is tugging on the mother's skirt. Outside the door there is grass & trees.

A. Research may be your first step. Which James Cole's style might it be to produce that sort of painting? Which area of the country is it from? What little clues in the painting might give away one artist or the other? Is any of them still alive? Any relatives or descendants who might be contacted? Is the name a pseudonym? Just checking Yahoo, www.oceansbridge.com is a good site for researching painters. I didnt find a James Cole, but there is a Thomas Cole of the Hudson River School of painting. Try everything

A. You should be careful when using websites as there is a lot of rubbish about that particular subject nowadays. You would be better to look at journals which specialise in art, folklore and related issues. Journals are much more likely to get you correct reliable information written by respectable people, and not just the nut job down the road who wants a bit of money! Good Luck!
