Fine art describes an art form developed primarily for aesthetics and/or concept rather than practical application. Art is often a synonym for fine art, as employed in the term "art gallery".

Historically, the fine arts were limited to painting, sculpture, architecture and engraving. Today, the fine arts commonly include visual and performing art forms, such as painting, sculpture, installation, Calligraphy, music, dance, theatre, architecture, photography and printmaking. However, in some institutes of learning or in museums fine art, and frequently the term fine arts (pl.) as well, are associated exclusively with the visual art forms.

The term is today usually avoided by academic art historians, and is much less used in any context in the UK than North America, especially in the singular form.

What is the difference between fine art and commercial art?
Q. and also, what is the purpose of fine art?
Asked by Emoticon - Tue Feb 10 19:47:12 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. the biggest difference is that, contrary to commercial art, fine art s main porpoise isn't economical. Fine art is very much like all art in general- intended to sometimes please the eye, conduct a message, register a specific time, indulge and provoke the audience. Commercial art is a a failry new term, ''art-vertisment'' is a way to combine art with a commercial porpoise- such as selling or showcasing a business. you could say you pamper yourself with fine art and you bring home the bacon with commercial art!

How to ship fine art + craft pieces?
Q. I am setting up a gallery which will sell curated pieces from artists based in key locations of the world. Buyers will be able to buy anywhere in the world. What I need is to understand: 1. How is fine art shipped from around the world, what are the considerations? 2. How are craft pieces which will include decorated tables, shipped? 3. Do FedEx and DHL also pack art pieces? Is there an art packaging service with a global presence? Reference to online guides will be invaluable, though I am have already googled and yahooed. Need advice from those in the art field.

A. Check out the Golden Paints website search engine, type in "shipping paintings" and you'll find some great advice on the technical aspects of shipping acrylic paintings. The rest of the info you want can be had by calling shipping companies. They have many insurance restrictions especially regarding shipping breakables - most will not insure anything glass or ceramic. Their size, weight and protective packaging restrictions are pretty stringent as well, but their representatives are very helpful. Mail Boxes Etc will pack your stuff for a price. You might be able to do it more cheaply yourself with the proper materials. I own a gallery and have shipped many pieces worldwide. I will not ship a painting that is framed with glass, but… [cont.]

A. Certainly aim for an A in Art, but to be honest so long as the other A-levels are decent (A - C grade) you should be ok. Your portfolio is more important than your grades with almost any practical art based subject at uni, be it fine art or even design. They want to see that you're very creative and have potential. Also if you chose an honours degree, you have to write a dissertation, so a good GCSE English grade is also quite important. You have plenty of time, I suggest researching uni's offering Fine Art (your tutor should be able to help with that), and see what their individual selection criteria are. Good luck.
