The Lesser Antilles, also known as the Caribbees, are part of the Antilles, which together with the Bahamas, the Turks and Caicos Islands, and Greater Antilles form the West Indies. The islands are a long partly volcanic island arc, most of which wrap around the eastern end of the Caribbean Sea on the western boundary with the Atlantic Ocean, and some of which lie on the southern fringe of the sea just north of South America.

Regional terminology

The two main groups of the Lesser Antilles are the Windward Islands in the south and the Leeward Islands in the north. The Windward Islands are called such because they were more windward to sailing ships arriving in the New World than the Leeward Islands, given that the prevailing trade winds blow east to west. The trans-Atlantic currents and winds that provided the fastest route across the ocean brought these ships to the rough dividing line between the Windward and Leeward Islands.

A third category which is part of the Lesser Antilles is the Netherlands Antilles. The Netherlands Antilles consist of two groups of three islands, one in the southwest (the Leeward Antilles or the ABC islands) just off the coast of Venezuela, plus a group of three more islands in the northeast (the Leeward Islands).

A. Well, from what I know Dominica isn't as modernized as some of the other islands such as Trinidad, Grenada, Jamica, St. Lucia, etc. But it should be a nice place, as all caribbean islands are...My suggestion is that you visit before deciding to move there. Another suggestion is to island hop with Liat first, before moving so you can take a look at the different islands to see which one you prefer. Another thing to look at is crime rate, as some islands have a somewhat high crime rate while some others have a very low rate. Here is a link to a Dominica newspaper online, that my help you in your decision;

Is Trinidad and Tobago part of the Lesser Antilles?
Q. Is Trinidad and Tobago part of the Lesser Antilles?

A. Yes. The Greater Antilles are the four largest islands in the northwestern portion of the Caribbean Sea - Cuba, Hispaniola (Haiti and the Dominican Republic), Jamaica, and Puerto Rico. The Lesser Antilles are the smaller islands of the Caribbean - the Windward Islands and Leeward Islands. T&T are two of the southern Windward Islands.

Unusual Hurricane?
Q. Do anyone remember Hurricane Lenny Back in 1999? It was a Storm that developed in the Caribbean sea and moved in a Eastward direction which is very unusual because nearly all Hurricanes develop in an area such as off the Cape Verde coast etc and move in a West-Northwest direction or even straight West. The question is what caused this Hurricane (Lenny) formed in the caribbean sea moved in a Eastward direction towards the Lesser antilles and not move in a Westward direction like most Hurricanes? (Please I need some sensible answers most likely someone who has a broad Knowledge on Meteorology :-) )

A. From the NHC archived Tropical Cyclone report: "One of the most interesting aspects of Lenny was its extended west-to-east motion through the Caribbean, unprecedented in the 113-year Atlantic basin tropical cyclone record. For its first 48 hours, Lenny moved on a east to east-southeast course. This motion was induced by the flow around the southern portion of a deep-layer trough located over the western Atlantic. Several shortwave troughs helped to amplify the mean western Atlantic trough through the period which increased the westerly steering flow. From 1200 UTC 15 November to 1800 UTC 16 November, Lenny's mean forward motion was 14 knots."
