Tar is modified resin produced primarily from the wood and roots of pine by destructive distillation under pyrolysis. It is a viscous black liquid. Production and trade in tar was a major contributor in the economies of Northern Europe and Colonial America. Its main use was in preserving and protecting wooden vessels against rot. The largest user was the Royal Navy. Demand for tar declined with the advent of iron and steel ships. Tar-like products can also be produced from other forms of organic matter such as peat. Mineral products resembling tar can be produced from fossil hydrocarbons including petroleum. Coal tar tar is produced from coal as a byproduct of coke production. From Wikipedia under the

Q. Yes, it's that time of year again, they just decided to fix cracks in a dunkin donuts parking lot with tar,,,in the summer,,,yeah. To make a long story short I walked it it, and now I have tar spots all over my flipflops. I don't think I can wash these in the washing machine. Any ideas on how to remove the tar? And prefferably any house hold items that I probbably already have? Asked by Casey Lynch - Wed Jun 27 09:40:24 2007 - - 17 Answers - 0 Comments A. Any hydrocarbon will work - gasoline, lighter fluid, etc. But you might want to test a little spot first. Hydrocarbons can dissolve some types of plastics and rubber products. Wet a paper towel with the fluid and keep dabbing it onto your flipflops. Answered by STEVE C - Wed Jun 27 09:47:48 2007 How do you remove tar from carpet? Q. We had roofing tar tracked in dots for about 35 ft at the office, and I wear the guilty shoe. Now, it's fallen in my lap to clean it up. There's a simple solution for cleaning carpet stains caused by tar, and it only takes minutes. Spray WD-40, the lubricant with thousands of uses, directly onto the tar. Leave it for about ten or fifteen minutes and wipe off with a clean cloth. You may have to repeat this a couple of times, but soon your carpet will look the same as it did before the tar was tracked in. Q. I want to pour tar on my driveway but not sure how it will set since there is gravel. Asked by nutritionist34 - Sun Jun 10 20:26:17 2007 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments A. Tar is not want you would want to use as it when it heats up, it becomes semi liquid and will make a real mess. A cutback or emulsion asphalt is what you want, probably an emulsion as it does not need to be heated to apply. Putting in on flattened and rolled, with a steel wheel roller will make a surface very much like an asphalt driveway at a fraction of the cost.
