An economy (or "the economy") is the realized economic system of a country or other area. It includes the production, exchange, distribution, and consumption of goods and services of that area. The study of different types and examples of economies is the subject of economic systems. A given economy is the end result of a process that involves its technological evolution, history and social organization, as well as its geography, natural resource endowment, and ecology, among other factors. These factors give context, content, and set the conditions and parameters in which an economy functions.

Today the range of fields of study exploring, registering and describing the economy or a part of it, include social sciences such as economics, as well as branches of history (economic history) or geography (economic geography). Practical fields directly related to the human activities involving production, distribution, exchange, and consumption of goods and services as a whole, range from engineering to management and business administration to applied science to finance. All kind of professions, occupations, economic agents or economic activities, contribute to the economy. Consumption, saving and investment are core variable components in the economy and determine market equilibrium. There are three main sectors of economic activity: primary, secondary and tertiary.

The word "economy" can be traced back to the Greek word "one who manages a household", derived from οἴκος, "house", and νέμω, "distribute (especially, manage)". From οἰκονόμος "of a household or family" but also senses such as "thrift", "direction", "administration", "arrangement", and "public revenue of a state". The first recorded sense of the word "economy", found in a work possibly composed in 1440, is "the management of economic affairs", in this case, of a monastery. Economy is later recorded in other senses shared by οἰκονομία in Greek, including "thrift" and "administration". The most frequently used current sense, "the economic system of a country or an area", seems not to have developed until the 19th or 20th century.

How long does it take for economic policies to have an effect?
Q. I am not an economist, but I would like to know how long it takes for economic policies to be fully felt, specifically related to the Congress and the President. Is it true that presidents who implement economic policies never experience them, and that it is the following president or the one after that experiences their economic failings or boons?

A. Policies to moderate business cycles should have effect within 6 month or a year. Pro growth policies left in place if successful should effect the trend growth rate (with cyclical behavior averaged out) so may not be apparent immediately, but looking back over a decade or so, should show up as change in the slope of the trend line. I can't think of any reason that they would suddenly kick in years later instead of having a cumulative effect.

How much economic benefit do parents provide by marrying and raising their children?
Q. My quick calculations suggest that the economic savings to government by parents who marry and make sacrifices for their real or potential children is substantial, if not staggering. If they spare our social services agencies major economic costs, this might suggest that marriage should be encouraged, rather than degraded to include relationships that do not involve real or potential parenting. How much economic benefit do married couples provide over the course of, say, 20 years of parenting? Suggested Google search: What is Mom worth?

A. It's certainly an interesting question you pose. However I have a question of my own. Since when did the institution of marriage become a decision based on economics verses morality and love? I think there's a far greater benefit to children and society when parents marry and mom stays home. Of course parenting comes with sacrifices, and in this day so does having one stay home. (usually mom) I think much of the decision is based on "what is important to us?" type thinking. There are many parents who want their cake and eat it to. In other words, they want the house, the boat, the motorcycle, the vacations AND kids. Most of that isn't realistic in most cases so there comes a sacrificial love that takes place when two people decide… [cont.]

What are the economic reasons opposing (or supporting) universal healthcare reform in the United States?
Q. Since we are in a recession without a difinite end in site, what are the economic implications (or benefits) and costs that would result?

A. Fascinating question. Let me first start with the cons: the U.S. is already in a poor fiscal state, and universal healthcare would only exacerbate the situation. Passing universal healthcare would require a lot of legislative resources, as well as a conscious effort to resist the lure of lobby groups. The pros are obvious: a population that is not scared of insurers, healthier people, and perhaps even better care. One point that is often glossed over is "job lock," a situation in which employees are afraid to switch employers because of the benefits offered by their present job. The benefits in this case are insurance; many employees are afraid to go job hunting and get away from their bad jobs because those jobs provide them with… [cont.]
