The decorative arts is a traditional term for a number of arts and crafts for the making of ornamental and functional works in a great range of materials including ceramic, wood, glass, metal, textiles and many others. The field includes ceramics, glassware, furniture, furnishings, interior design, but not usually architecture. The decorative arts are often categorized in opposition to the "fine arts", namely, painting, drawing, photography, and large-scale sculpture, which generally have no function other than to be looked at. Some distinguish between decorative and fine art based on functionality, intended purpose, importance, status as a unique creation, or single-artist production. Decorative arts, or furnishings, may be fixed (for example, wallpaper), or moveable (for example, lamps). Applied art includes the decorative arts but also graphic design and other categories, such as industrial design, which may overlap with decorative art. In general the term "decorative arts" is not much used of contemporary work, which tends to be called design instead. In art history the term minor arts is often used for the decorative arts. From Google News Search: "decorative arts" I just started a new career as a decorative arts/antiques dealer? Q. How can I appeal to Interior Designers? (we're already on 1stdibs) Asked by dahlia - Tue Aug 28 23:58:11 2007 - - 1 Answers - 1 Comments A. Hi! Think like an interior designer. Where do they look for resources? The Internet is only one tool. You might want to become a member of ASID as well as the antique associations, advertise in the better interior design and antique publications, perhaps get involved with a show like the Armory Show that's held in New York, or become associated with an established firm so you are represented in the showrooms, get involved with designer showcases, and list your firm in all resource journals. Hope that this helped a bit. Good luck! Q. I work at a decorative arts gallery and we're looking to get a third computer, a laptop. Everyone here is familiar with computers but no one is a techie. We need it for email, printing, not storing, but being able to pull up large TIF files, and my boss would like to be able to network into the computers at the store while she is away. Any suggestions? Asked by dahlia - Tue Jul 3 16:31:48 2007 - - 9 Answers - 0 Comments A. If I remember correctly, TIF files are image files, and I would say that an Apple laptop would be great for this. You should get at least one gigabyte of RAM, and an average graphics card (or adapter). I would guess you can get this for less than $1000. These laptops can network, print files, and do email things too of course. Apple runs the MacOS or Linux OS instead of Windows, but a computer that runs Windows will do the job too if thats what you guys are used to.
