Nouncountries
AnagramsFrom Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. In geography, a country is a geographical region. The term is often applied to a political division or the territory of a sovereign state, or to a smaller, or former, political division of a geographical region. Usually, but not always, a country coincides with a sovereign territory and is associated with a state, nation or government. In common usage, the term country is used in the sense of both nations and states, with definitions varying. In some cases it is used to refer both to states and to other political entities, while in some occasions it refers only to states It is not uncommon for general information or statistical publications to adopt the wider definition for purposes such as illustration and comparison. Some cohesive geographical entities, which were formerly sovereign states, are commonly regarded and referred to still as countries; such as England, Scotland and Wales – in the United Kingdom. Historically, the countries of the former Soviet Union and Yugoslavia were others. Former states such as Bavaria (now part of Germany) and Piedmont (now part of Italy) would not normally be referred to as "countries" in contemporary English. The degree of autonomy of non-state countries varies widely. Some are possessions of states, as several states have overseas dependencies (such as the British Virgin Islands, Saint Pierre and Miquelon, and American Samoa), with territory and citizenry distinct from their own. Such dependent territories are sometimes listed together with independent states on lists of countries, and may be treated as a "country of origin" in international trade, as Hong Kong is. Some countries are divided among several states, such as Korea and Kurdistan. From Wikipedia under the

Answered by Pink.Cheeks - Mon Jan 25 14:11:36 2010 What countries expect the world to revert to the gold standard?
Q. I've noted the number of gold collectors on tv adverts and other places, and wonder if it's part of a strategy to outwit another 1930s crash or power play by gold rich countries, or just plain old (but continuous) financial insecurity in these unsteady times. I read somewhere that before ww2 some economies was so bad that people were swapping a gold ring or necklace for a slice of bread. Asked by stella - Sat Dec 26 08:06:25 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. 1. None. No one in his right mind expects any country to revert to the gold standard much less the world as a whole. Even people wanted to (and no country really does), there might be enough gold in the entire for a small country to do so, but not enough for the U.S., much less the entire world. 2. During periods of hyperinflation, the local currency becomes essentially worthless. In such times, it is often the case that people end up using other portable assets as money. Gold rings are a simple example; sterling silver dinner ware (flatware, serving utensils, etc.) is another classic. But in countries where people have access to dollars, that is the alternative of choice these days.
