Coal is a readily combustible black or brownish-black sedimentary rock normally occurring in rock strata in layers or veins called coal beds. The harder forms, such as anthracite coal, can be regarded as metamorphic rock because of later exposure to elevated temperature and pressure. It is composed primarily of carbon along with variable quantities of other elements, chiefly sulfur, hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen. Coal was formed from layer upon layer of annual plant remains accumulating slowly that were protected from biodegradation by usually acidic covering waters that gave a natural antiseptic effect combating microorganisms and then later mud deposits protecting against oxidization in the widespread shallow seas — mainly during the Carboniferous period — thus trapping atmospheric carbon in the ground in immense peat bogs that eventually were covered over and deeply buried by sediments under which they metamorphosed into coal. In this manner, over time, the chemical and physical properties of the plant remains (believed to mainly have been fern-like species antedating more modern plant and tree species) were changed by geological action to create a solid material. Coal, a fossil fuel, is the largest source of energy for the generation of electricity worldwide, as well as one of the largest worldwide anthropogenic sources of carbon dioxide emissions. Gross carbon dioxide emissions from coal usage are slightly more than those from petroleum and about double the amount from natural gas. Coal is extracted from the ground by mining, either underground or in open pits. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License How does coal soot affect water quality? Q. Does anyone know the effects of coal soot in water? Does it change the pH or the hardness of the water? If the emissions of the coal burning facility (in this case a coal furnace for ones house) were directly injected into a water supply how would that affect it? Would it kill things or would there be an algal bloom due to the high amounts of CO2? Im doing an experiment in which I WANT an algal bloom. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks! Answered by mamapoulette - Sat Mar 29 17:53:42 2008 What would happen if all the coal in the world were to become depleted (in the very near future)? Q. What would happen? I know there is oil and gas to rely on also, but coal is a major resource - so what would happen if it were to become completely depleted? Asked by Leigh B - Mon Jan 12 05:37:56 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. Probably a lot of countries would go to war. There would be maybe even world chaos and we would have another financial crisis because we have not got enough alternative energy sources in use. However countries like Australia would probably stop selling all coal and use the rest of it while starting up alternative fuel sources. Countries like china, India, and japan to go to war with us so we would quickly have to make alliances and separate our friends from our foes. As for the worlds energy source each country would have to use different types of renewable energy sources depending on their terrain, climate and environmental conditions etc.. and transportation such as cars, planes and boats etc... would completely change from using fossil… [cont.] Answered by frogger249 - Mon Jan 12 05:58:08 2009 Please can you tell me what an English coal miner would have eaten?
