Generally, a battle is a conceptual component in the hierarchy of combat in warfare between two or more armed forces, wherein each group will seek to defeat the others within the scope of a military campaign, and are well defined in duration, area and force commitment.

Wars and military campaigns are guided by strategy, whereas battles take place on a level of planning and execution known as operational mobility. German strategist Carl von Clausewitz stated that "the employment of battles ... to achieve the object of war" was the essence of strategy.

Where and when was the first battle between the British and the Americans?
Q. WHAT was the fist battle between the British and the Americans? WHEN was it, what month and year WHERE was this battle at? WHO won this battle? what was so significant about it?

A. There are a couple possibilities. The Boston Massacre of 1770 saw the death of several Americans who were heckling British troops. However, the war did not start until five years later, so a better choice would probably be the Battle of Lexington, in Massachusetts, April 13, 1775. British troops marched from Boston to the town of Lexington hoping to find illegal weapons, and wound up in a battle with American guerilla fighters. The Brits were ultimately forced to retreat back to Boston with no captured weapons, and a number of dead and wounded.

How did the Gettysburg Campaign lead to the Battle of Gettysburg?
Q. I am doing a project on the Battle of Gettysburg and I am trying to figure out how the Gettysburg Campaign fit in with the battle (and why it's called the Gettysburg Campaign when the battle of Gettysburg was neither the first nor last battle in the campaign). I'd also like to know some of the political/strategic motives for Generals Lee and Meade and what Lincoln had to do with it all. I do not need wikipedia excerpts, just a really good explanation!

A. A campaign is a series of battles trying to end up with an end result. Lee campaign was trying to bring the offensive to the north. Hit them where it hurt. Which was the northern bread basket(farm) his thinking was if he could do that maybe he could sue for peace. So you take all those battles that happen in the campaign, like Pickett's charge, little round top, that is the campaign.
