Can someone who is an art dealer tell me about my piece of folk art on ebay-a 5" wood carving of a woman?
Q. If you go on ebay, it's in Antiques, then "folk art', then'sculpted or carved', then between '1900-1949'. It is an old woman wearing a dress and an apron, with her hair in a bun, that was hand carved. I thought it might be Elijah Pierce's work, but after looking at his work it appears he did mostly 2D pieces. So really I have no clue. That's all I'm looking for - is some direction. Any help would be appreciated.

Q. I'm trying to find out what is the perpective of the general public about this type of art.

A. I LOVE the color and the honesty of the subject matter.I am also intrigued by the particular mix that says "Spanish Inquisition/Aztec death cult. Don't get me wrong I am not into the macabre as a general rule. It just really interests me the way the natives incorporated the Catholicism of Spain into their traditional visual art. All of those Day of the Dead figures and the figures of the saints with their broken bodies and streaming tears. Even "insider art" like that of Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo is just an educated, classically influenced morph of the same thing. Mexican folk art has a delightful vulgarity to it, the stylized shapes and symbols, the bright colors, the exuberance, the absolute honesty that is like Mexican food -… [cont.]

Who made the folk art comics with butterfly winged children?
Q. This is a pretty vague question, so I will try to give more detail here. A janitor at a magazine company would collect the rejected and trashed pages from the magazines that the company made. He would cut out figures, clothes, and backgrounds from these, and use them, or trace over them, to create a comic/graphic novel. The most striking images are those of children with big butterfly wings flying, and sometimes being attacked by soldiers in World War 1 uniforms. Do any of you know who made these comics, or where I can see a collection of the images?

What is a folk or art song?
Q. My University requires auditions for musical ensembles and this is what they say for vocalists: vocalists should try to bring a prepared folk or art song if possible. I've been in multiple choruses all my life but I am not exactly sure if I have been singing what would be called folk or art songs... Can anybody tell me what kind of songs fit these categories or give me any insight on the type of music they are looking for?
Asked by rachel_ohanlon - Mon May 26 19:42:13 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Folk can either mean old traditional songs like "John Henry" or when "Johnny Comes Marching Home," or more modern songs by singer-songwriters, often with traditional instruments like acoustic guitars or banjoes. See artists like Sufjan Stevens, Iron and Wine, Joanna Newsom, or Cat Power for modern folk.

There are 3 artists named James Cole. How do I find out which artist did my painting? I have asked art folk.
Q. My painting is of a young mother holding an infant in the doorway of her home. A small dog is tugging on the mother's skirt. Outside the door there is grass & trees.

A. Research may be your first step. Which James Cole's style might it be to produce that sort of painting? Which area of the country is it from? What little clues in the painting might give away one artist or the other? Is any of them still alive? Any relatives or descendants who might be contacted? Is the name a pseudonym? Just checking Yahoo, www.oceansbridge.com is a good site for researching painters. I didnt find a James Cole, but there is a Thomas Cole of the Hudson River School of painting. Try everything

A. Well, Barb, for a start, your domain is "villagefolkart.com", not "village folk art," as you mentioned, nor "villagefolkart.org," etc. That domain record, maintained by your registrar, not your web host, points to a server, currently p4p.geo.vip.re4.yahoo.com (216.39.62.192), which is owned by Altavista Company. A. I'm not sure if I have the perfect definition for folk are. I know it's got a very homey feel to it. I love its simplicity. I have been in and to juried shows and stuffy events and I've been to just craft shows where anyone can set up. I prefer to see the latter. It's amazing what great ideas people come up with.
