Is there a type of hand plane that would gently round over sharp edges on a wooden piece of folk art animal ?
Q. trying to do some wooden folk art carvings, and was wondering is there a hand tool that you could use to round over the animals backs and shoulder's etc that would look good i was thinking more of something like a spokeshave, to give it the look of a carving rather then just sanded down completely. in fact, would a spoke shave work, or is there an actual type of hand plane that would give the effect i'm looking for?

How can I paint my wood trim with folk art pure gold acrylic paint?do I need to prepare the wood first ?
Q. I tried to apply it to painted wood with a nylon brush and it looks streaky and I dont think it will stay on! This is on the bottom trim in the staircase. I love the gold color and don't want to delute that, but maybe I should mix the paint with another paint or a clear poyurathane? What would that do to the acrylic gold paint?
Asked by wondergirl - Sat Oct 21 13:31:20 2006 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. you would have to sand and prime the trim first. You might could get away with not priming it but you will definitely have to sand it so the paint will stick. Otherwise the paint will either peel or chip off the first time someone hits it with their foot. Also try to apply the paint with sponge applicator. Another thing is if you go to the paint store or Menards or Lowe's or a place like that, you can ask them and they can tell you what to do.

Question for Photography assignement - folk or fine art?
Q. The question is: "Why can photography be called a 'folk art' as opposed to a 'fine art' "? I'm a little confused because folk art is art iconic to an indigenous culture but photography is part of the entire Western world. I think there are arguements for both but the question is asking for the arguement for 'folk'.
Asked by Cat.j - Fri Jun 25 21:15:23 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. folk art: Photography can be both and more. I think people may view it as more democratic and a 'friendlier' art then lets say painting or sculpture, which have become more and more academic. This has become more true since the advent of the smaller format cameras, Instamatic-cameras, brownies, range finders, point and shots, etc. Credit has often been given to W. Eugene Smith, not for this particular trend, but for making smaller formats more palatable by forcing Life Magazine to 'allow' him to use a 35mm slr camera back in the day. Up until that time professionals only used Large format equipment. I think this has something to do with it. Lay people would see professionals using smaller and less expensive equipment and be moved to… [cont.]

Q. What is the significance of the skeleton in Mexican folk art?
Asked by David C - Tue Sep 11 17:49:31 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. A common misconception in the United States is that Cinco de Mayo is Mexico's Independence Day; Mexico's Independence Day is September 16 (dieciseis de septiembre in Spanish). About skeletons in Mexican folk art: It represents the dead. The Spanish in Mexico incorporated parts of the indigenous belief system into Dia de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead). This is celebrated every year on All Hallow's Eve (Halloween), and All Soul's Eve; October 31st and November 1st, respectivly. More than 500 years ago, when the Spanish Conquistadors landed in what is now Mexico, they encountered natives practicing a ritual that seemed to mock death. It was a ritual the indigenous people had been practicing at least 3,000 years. A ritual the Spaniards… [cont.]

What is a folk or art song?
Q. My University requires auditions for musical ensembles and this is what they say for vocalists: vocalists should try to bring a prepared folk or art song if possible. I've been in multiple choruses all my life but I am not exactly sure if I have been singing what would be called folk or art songs... Can anybody tell me what kind of songs fit these categories or give me any insight on the type of music they are looking for?
Asked by rachel_ohanlon - Mon May 26 19:42:13 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Folk can either mean old traditional songs like "John Henry" or when "Johnny Comes Marching Home," or more modern songs by singer-songwriters, often with traditional instruments like acoustic guitars or banjoes. See artists like Sufjan Stevens, Iron and Wine, Joanna Newsom, or Cat Power for modern folk.

A. Hi, here are the best websites (with pics) for Bangladesh folk arts. There is an Arts and Crafts museum in Dacca, but their site has no visuals, just a summary of the museum. here is a good site about the best book about Bangladesh contemporary art (it has some visuals) Perhaps, the best known and most documented folk art of Bangladesh is the "ricksha" art. Ricksha owners paint their vehicles in very individual ways and with rich imagery. There are books and sites on the subject, but this is my favorite because it has the best on-line gallery: Finally here is one museum site with an interesting dicussion of craft revival: Remember Bangladesh was part of the Indian state of Bengal until 1947, so you can find discussions of… [cont.]

Q. How do folk art or songs differ around the world?
Asked by Fredjee - Mon Jul 7 10:02:36 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. They alter for social, cultural and religious reasons as symbols (in art) are interpreted in a slightly different way because of the above differences. for example: in new zealand maori art is different to aborigine art because of the simple fact that different pigments (natural dyes) are used in the painting process. (it was difficult to obtain a dye that you couldnt grow naturally) You could argue therefore that differences are also demographic as well as social simply because the land in which people live is both changeable (due to the climate) and used for different reasons. For example the aborigines were nomads (wandering people) and the maori's settlers, consequently their music and folk lore represents this. Hope this helps. If you… [cont.]
