A. You need to take a "long" view on art. The way art has developed from the ancient to more modern times is astounding, but I feel people may be putting a "value" on art based on how they feel about the way people in olden times were able to portrait things, e.g. "lack of" perspective, anatomical dimension, reality being "far off", lack of expression etc. I really don't agree with this way of looking at art. Today's art is at least no better or worse than the art of previous centuries. I find that today's art has become in some ways quite presumptious, wanting to prove something but being stuck in some weird symbolism that is not quite understandable by a lot of people. Art has to be acceptable for many, and this is mostly about a "feeling [cont.]

A. Ancient Egyptian art was governed by tradition, religious rules and a particular way of seeing everyday objects. It evolved very closely with Egyptian writing (hieroglyphs) and like them it was ruled by a set of "canons" or regulations, which remained virtually unchanged for thousands of years. Objects were depicted in a schematic way, so that if you wanted to draw a human figure, each element of that figure had to be depicted from its most recognisable viewpoint; the face must be in profile, but the eye must be seen frontally, the shoulders must be shown frontally but the torso and stomach must be in profile. The arms and legs are also seen as if from the side, leading to some strange contortions (to modern western eyes). A building or… [cont.]
