They work by induction You know from magnetism courses that magnetic fields are created by changing currents So the magnetic field around a wire with AC in it is always changing up and down.. The Clamp amp meter has a coil in it.. It uses the other principle of electro magnetism that if a wire is placed in a changing magnetic field then the current in the wire is proportional to the change in the magnetic field.
