Folk art encompasses art produced from an indigenous culture or by peasants or other laboring tradespeople. In contrast to fine art, folk art is primarily utilitarian and decorative rather than purely aesthetic. As a phenomenon that can chronicle a move towards civilization yet rapidly diminish with modernity, industrialization, or outside influence, the nature of folk art is specific to its particular culture. The varied geographical and temporal prevalence and diversity of folk art make it difficult to describe as a whole, though some patterns have been demonstrated. Antique Folk ArtLogo of the Folk Art Museum Lok Virsa in Islamabad, Pakistan.Antique folk art is distinguished from traditional art in that while it is collected today based mostly on its artistic merit; it was never intended as a category to be art for art’s sake. Examples include: weathervanes, old store signs and carved figures, itinerant portraits, carousel horses, fire buckets, painted game boards, cast iron doorstops and many other similar lines of highly collectible "whimsical" antiques. Q. I am suppose to write this essay but no where in the chapter does it tell what the 4 traditional roles are. Choose any artwork in your text. In an essay, discuss what interests (or not interests) you about that artwork and identify which of the four traditional roles it fulfills. What is the subject matter, form, and content of the artwork? Asked by Debbie_in_Gold - Sat May 24 17:50:18 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. Wow! That really sounds like a "textbook" question. Here's a clip of something I found on the web... Art has always played several roles in society, including that of commentator on social events and trends. For example, Jonathan Swift's satires, while entertaining, simultaneously critiqued those in power. Art also plays the role of underscoring what is important in a society or to the artist. The Sistine Chapel demonstrates the awe and wonder that Michelangelo and his society had for God. Today many are still deeply impacted by this masterful work. Art also raises awareness of issues that society might otherwise miss. For instance, stunning photographs of starving children bring home the plight of many who might otherwise be forgotten.… [cont.] Answered by pj - Sat May 24 18:04:36 2008 Is traditional art still popular? Q. I would like to know if anyone responding to this still thinks traditional art such as drawing is popular or has the majority gone to software art programs like Maya? Asked by Explorer - Sat Sep 6 02:05:32 2008 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments A. I know a lot of traditional artists who can still "make it" out in the world with their traditional art. And image editing programs like Adobe Photoshop and OpenCanvas incorporate tools and features that often attempt to imitate the real thing. So yes, traditional art is still popular. Most of the time, the excellent graphic artists you see learned their trade by learning to draw with pencil and paper and studying from life. Image editing programs are fun and easy to use once you get used to them, but nothing beats some paints, pencils, papers, pens, and whatever else you can throw in an artist's work area. Q. Explain how Fountain 1917 challanges traditional values in art? Asked by Dale Lowe - Tue Aug 21 03:04:05 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. Are you referring to Marcel Duchamp's "sculpture" entitled "Fountain"? If so, it challenged traditional art by stating that a urinal, placed on its side, and mounted on a pedestal, was as much a piece of art as any of the other pieces being shown. Duchamp used the piece to shock European culture into seeing that their society and culture had become corrupted. 1917 was the bloodiest year of World War I, and he was in essence making an anti-war statement, along with an anti-European culture statement: "We think our culture is so good and beautiful, but it has led to this savage war. We are so clueless that we will drink our own urine and think it is champagne!" Answered by epublius76 - Wed Aug 22 14:11:14 2007 From Yahoo Answer Search: "Traditional art" |
