There are tens of thousands of museums all over the world. For a relatively short list, see the List of museums. The museums of ancient times, such as the Musaeum of Alexandria, would be equivalent to a modern graduate institute. The modern meaning of the word can be traced to the Museum of Pergamon in Anatolia, which displayed artwork.

What makes a good museum? What have you found to be the most effective ways for Museums to promote themselves?
Q. How have you found Museums to be successful in promoting their upcoming exhibitions? Have you seen certain ideas work for getting their name in more outlets?

A. The museum and the art community have a strong link. Cross marketing has been successful and an inexpensive way to work. Eg. Museum puts their leaflets at the theatres. And lets the theatre put their leaflets in the museum. That way, they promote each other's services without costing anything. The link could be similarly used for websites. Also, to tap on each other's data base for direct mailing.

what do you think of museums and the presentation of the artefacts?
Q. I recently visited the museum of london and thought that the use of film, interactive things and recreations of houses was great. Do you think museums should have more of these? would we learn more if they did? Also, is there enough informaton in museums about the artefacts?

A. I think there there should be more interactive things in museums. It's a great way to get to know the subject. An example is a bug museum I went to having a little area where we could see through the eyes of a fly. I don't think photography should be allowed around more delicate artifacts and artwork. It could damage the pigments that give the item color or maybe even cause a slow breakdown of the structure of the items. The use of films is a great way to enhance an experience but I don't think anything can replace actually being close to the items in museums.
