Naïve art is a classification of art that is often characterized by a childlike simplicity in its subject matter and technique. While many naïve artists appear, from their works, to have little or no formal art training, this is often not true.

Characteristics

The term naïve art is often seen as outsider art which is without a formal training or degree. While this was true before the twentieth century, there are now academies for naïve art. Naïve art is now a fully recognized art genre, represented in art galleries worldwide.

The characteristics of naïve art are an awkward relationship to the formal qualities of painting. Difficulties with drawing and perspective that result in a charmingly awkward and often refreshing vision, strong use of pattern, unrefined color, and simplicity rather than subtlety are all supposed markers of naïve art. It has, however, become such a popular and recognizable style that many examples could be called pseudo-naïve.

Whereas naïve art ideally describes the work of an artist who did not receive formal education in an art school or academy, for example Henri Rousseau or Alfred Wallis, 'pseudo naïve' or 'faux naïve' art describes the work of an artist working in a more imitative or self-conscious mode and whose work can be seen as more imitative than original.

"Primitive art" is another term often applied to art by those without formal training, but is historically more often applied to work from certain cultures that have been judged socially or technologically "primitive" by Western academia, such as Native American, subsaharan African or Pacific Island art. This is distinguished from the self-conscious, "primitive" inspired movement primitivism. Another term related to (but not completely synonymous with) naïve art is folk art.

Girl crushed me in hapkido class - should I quit?
Q. I'm 20 y o and I've done hapkido for two months and the other day I got paired up in sparring with this 19 year old girl in my class, that I have a crush on (she is really cute and hot and very nice). She is already a black belt though and she totally destroyed me!! It felt like the "match" would never end (I bet some are smiling while reading this). My ego is pretty crushed after that one too. I was totally blushing after. Maybe I'm naive but I didn't think I could be totally outclassed by a cute little 5'5'', 115-30 lbs girl (I am 5'11, 170 lbs). I didn't stand a chance! How do I deal with this? Dose it mean I suck at martial arts? I only know I am going to ask the girl out though -that hasn't changed. Since people are asking: yes I… [cont.]

A. No you don't suck, she is more skilled than you at Hapkido for the moment. (You will improve greatly if you stick with it.) Just keep in mind two things: That skill in any art is most often trained and very rarely exists naturally, and most martial arts styles have been developed to mitigate differences in size and strength between opponents. One other thought that might be of help, she did "beat" you.. but instead of being intimidated or frustrated by her, try joking with her about it and asking her to help you train / train with you. That should help with the stress, and you get to know her. =)

What do you think of this poem by me? "Buried Dreams" it's called?
Q. It s been years since my last attempt At painting My wish for doing art Has been somehow discouraged I lost confidence in my skills For some years never daring To make any try Yet these days of silence Loneliness, and thinking Wandering while confused about my future Waiting for the university courses to start I came across some visions of beauty I ve been playing with some images And I tried to understand what makes beauty Maybe I should limit myself just to watch Other people s art I don t think I am any good Except if I keep it to myself and do it for my own enjoyment and maybe for a few people who might enjoy it as well It would be only for fun and nothing more just to pass my time in a nice way How many dreams Have we not given up… [cont.]
