Do Art Galleries Usually Charge Artists Advertising Fees For Emerging Artist Shows?
Q. I had an East Coast art gallery contact me about doing a one-person show. They said that I would have to pay a portion of the advertising. I've shown in West Coast galleries (in group shows) before and never had to pay anything but my 50% commission an sales. Are these fees customary in NY / East Coast, or is it a scam?

I have never been asked to pay for "advertising costs" the gallery of worth showing at should have its own following and pre existing market-if you think its worth showing, how much are they asking for upfront? you should be countering with a request for lower commission rate to the gallery and a request for references from artists who have successfully dealt with the gallery. what is the name of the gallery? do they have an online site? If not, i would deem it not worth your time, esp. if you will travelling/shipping cross country. Good Luck! A. Do you have a portfolio of your work? If so, then you are halfway there. If not, get busy - that is step #1, and you will use it so much more than you think. A portfolio does not have to be fancy - if you are on a budget (like me) a nice plain photo album with GOOD pictures representing your work. Note 'Current Available Pieces' as well as 'Past Sold Works'. Get some cheap but nice looking business cards (Vistaprint.com) You do not even have to have that part done yet to go scope out some galleries. Visit as a shopper and see who carries local artists. Pay attention to the types of art they have in the gallery as well as the price ranges and ask yourself if yours would 'fit'. When you have a decent portfolio & cards, go BACK to the… [cont.]
