The visual arts are art forms that focus on the creation of works which are primarily visual in nature, such as traditional plastic arts - drawing, painting, sculpture, architecture, printmaking-, modern visual arts -photography, video and filmmaking-, design and crafts. Many artistic disciplines (performing arts, language arts, textile arts, and culinary arts) involve aspects of the visual arts as well as other types, so these definitions are not strict.

A changing concept The current usage of the term "visual arts" includes fine arts as well as crafts, but this was not always the case. Before the Arts and Crafts movement in Britain and elsewhere at the turn of the 20th century, "visual artist" referred to a person working in the fine arts (such as painting, sculpture, or printmaking) and not the handicraft, craft, or applied art disciplines. The distinction was emphasized by artists of the Arts and Crafts movement who valued vernacular art forms as much as high forms. The movement contrasted with modernists who sought to withhold the high arts from the masses by keeping them esoteric. Art schools made a distinction between the fine arts and the crafts in such a way that a craftsperson could not be considered a practitioner of art.

Is an ROP Culainary Arts class acceptable for the visual arts class needed to graduate high school?
Q. I have to take a full year of a visual/performing art (drawing, drama, etc.) but my high school does not offer many choices that I am even remotely interested in. If I take a class in Culinary Arts elsewhere (ROP or at a college), will that count? Or is that a different art that I don't need to graduate? Culinary Arts* sorry =x

A. look up culinary in the dictionary - you'll find it has to do with cooking. perhaps you can convince the powers that you plan to host a TV cooking show?

Program for the Gifted in Visual Arts?
Q. I need some help. My daughter has been advised to apply for admission to a program for the gifted in visual arts (elementary school). I would LOVE to see her in this program. It doesn't cost anything and is sponsored by the regular school system. What are they looking for when they make their placement decisions? They have asked me to fill out a questionnaire (which I have done) about my daughter and her talents and abilities. Does anyone know their criteria for selecting which students are admitted into a program such as this? Thanks!!

A. Usually these sort of things are judged on a folio of some sort. Many years ago I was in a similar program in Australia. Art is one of those things which needs to be seen, you can't tell if someone has talent from a questionnaire. If I were you and would phone up the school and just ask what the criteria is and how it was judged. You might find you need to present a folio later which you could get started on now. cheers

A. Graphic Design (Bachelor's required), Web Design, music performance, dance, music directing, etc. I was thinking of majoring in Graphic Design, but I didn't do that. I may minor in music, though. Those are a few careers I know. The best ones are Graphic Design and web design. Hope this helps.
