The visual arts are art forms that create works which are primarily visual in nature, such as ceramics, drawing, painting, sculpture, architecture, printmaking, modern visual arts (photography, video, and filmmaking), design and crafts. These definitions should not be taken too strictly as many artistic disciplines (performing arts, conceptual art, textile arts) involve aspects of the visual arts as well as arts of other types. Also included within the visual arts are the applied arts such as industrial design, graphic design, fashion design, interior design and decorative art.

As indicated above, the current usage of the term "visual arts" includes fine art as well as the applied, decorative arts and crafts, but this was not always the case. Before the Arts and Crafts Movement in Britain and elsewhere at the turn of the 20th century, the term artist was often restricted to a person working in the fine arts (such as painting, sculpture, or printmaking) and not the handicraft, craft, or applied art media. The distinction was emphasized by artists of the Arts and Crafts Movement who valued vernacular art forms as much as high forms. Art schools made a distinction between the fine arts and the crafts maintaining that a craftsperson could not be considered a practitioner of art.

The increasing tendency to privilege painting, and to a lesser degree sculpture, above other arts has been a feature of Western art as well as East Asian art. In both regions painting has been seen as relying to the highest degree on the imagination of the artist, and the furthest removed from manual labour - in Chinese painting the most highly-valued styles were those of "scholar-painting", at least in theory practiced by gentleman amateurs. The Western hierarchy of genres reflected similar attitudes.

What to do with a double major of Anthropology and Photography/Visual Arts?
Q. I'm planning to get a degree in Anthropology and perhaps Photography, Visual Arts, Art and Design, or Art Education? I'm so undecided! I was also wondering where I could go from there, what careers/jobs? Where I could teach if I ended up getting an education degree for my anthropology major? Like, high schools or college? Would I teach Anthropology or something more like Sociology?

A. You'd mostly head to high schools and eventually colleges for education with anthropology. I'd just like to point out, that I hope you have taken into consider what you are planning to do. Anthropology and Art are very different, and taking a double major means the tuition per year will be significantly higher + you'll have double the classes since not many (if any) class will overlap for each major.

A. Visual arts invovles a lot of different types of tasks, including graphic design, interior design and so on. There are many careers that incorporate those but you would have to really decide for yourself what type of art makes you flourish. If it's something you would enjoy and be able to make money then you might want to make a career change.

A. Visual art is art forms that focus on the creation of works which are generally visual in nature, these include painting, photography film making, printing (ie. screen print). Those that involve 3D, such as sculpture are called 'plastic arts'. Many artistic disciplines (performing arts, textile arts, and culinary arts) involve some aspects of the visual arts, so the definitions are not as strict as they once were.. The current usage of the term "visual arts" includes fine art and crafts. I imagine that if you are going to do a course majoring in visual arts, you will cover painting techniques, drawing techniques (still life and life possibly), some photography, possibly some image manipulation with in Photoshop or similar, printing… [cont.]
