Academic art is a style of painting and sculpture produced under the influence of European academies or universities.

Specifically, academic art is the art and artists influenced by the standards of the French Académie des beaux-arts, which practiced under the movements of Neoclassicism and Romanticism, and the art that followed these two movements in the attempt to synthesize both of their styles, and which is best reflected by the paintings of William-Adolphe Bouguereau, Suzor-Coté, Thomas Couture, and Hans Makart. In this context it is often called "academism", "academicism", "L'art pompier", and "eclecticism", and sometimes linked with "historicism" and "syncretism".

The art influenced by academies and universities in general is also called "academic art". In this context as new styles are embraced by academics, the new styles come to be considered academic, thus what was at one time a rebellion against academic art becomes academic art.

Art colleges do not offer academic art, classical realism drawing and painting. Where should I study?
Q. Art colleges and Liberal Arts Colleges with Art Departments teach theory and modern art without good basic training in drawing and painting. My main interest is in Classical Realism, Contemporaray Realism, Academic Art,Still Lifes, and Portraits. Where can I get the skills needed to become a succesful painter ?

A. You should try an "atelier" school. They are popping up more and more. A good web site to see "approved" ateliers is artrenewal.org. Its the Art Renewal Center. I know of one in Rhode Island named The New School of Classical Art. Web site- danalevin.com. It is a very focused education, you will work hard and get results in painting and drawing that there is no way you could get in a regular art school. In ateliers you get individual attention from you instructor, you get to see how they work and run their studio. For someone who wants to be a painter- in my opinion- it is the only way to go.

What is the most academic elementary public school in Petaluma, California?
Q. We are moving to Petaluma soon and are trying to figure out what the best school to send our two children (going into grades 2 and 5) to is. We have been in a private school, but want to change to public. Waldorf is not for us. We want a school that is academic and has art, music, and advanced programs. We want a community school where parents are involved and the school must have good leadership. Any help at all would be much appreciated. We would also consider moving to sebastopol or west santa rosa. Thank you so much!

When a college's website says a minimum or middle GPA, do they mean academic or every class you take?
Q. academic as in math, english, foreign language, science and social studies or all as in those listed plus P.E., fine arts academic electives
Asked by pinkelephanthp - Thu Sep 17 22:15:16 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Usually it is for all of your academic classes and all electives except for P.E. because most college recruiters don't care that you got an A in P.E. unless they are scouting you for an athletic scholarship.
